Can I Be My Own Boss How To Know If Entrepreneurship Is Right For You - When I Grow Up

Can I Be My Own Boss How To Know If Entrepreneurship Is Right For You - When I Grow Up If you’re here, the chances are you’ve already asked yourself this question a few (hundred) times: “Can I be my own boss?” The short answer is: Yes. The long answer is: Yes, but it requires that you do a smidgen of soul searching, a dash of self-reflecting, and a whole bunch of looking towards the future. The rest of the internet might tell you it takes a certain kind of person to embark on entrepreneurship or that you need certain personality traits. I’m very happy to be the one to debunk this theory. After working with hundreds of women across the world, I know that introverts, extroverts, nighttime dwellers, morning birds, single parents, single ladies, multipassionates, type A and type B thinkers, to infinity and beyond, can all own their own business and thrive in a passionate career. I’ve seen it with my own professional eyes, you guys. So let me tell you… Here’s what it really takes to know if you can be your own boss: You know: You have something to offer, be it a service, product, or other. In some cases, you might not have identified the “what” yet, but you know in your heart of hearts, you are capable of giving more than whatever it is you’re doing right now. You feel in your gut that you are wasting your potential (maybe at a crappy day job) and know there is just so much more you can offer in this lifetime. You want to make your own schedule. This is slightly less idealistic than the first point, but just as important of a “boss” indicator. When you work for yourself, you are in charge. You make the rules. You make the schedule. If you’re dying to set your own hours, work when you’re most productive, and craft a calendar around your personal life’s challenges, circumstances, and goals, yes, babe. You can be your own boss. If you like the sound of all of those things but have a hard time with time-management, fear not. There are tons of available resources and tools out there that can help you (yes, you! Ms. Always 15 Mins Behind) keep your schedule moving. You’ve dreamt about owning your own business for forever-ish. Here’s a little business coach truth bomb: Our dreams are not meant to be fantasies. They are meant to be compasses guiding us towards the most fulfilling life we can live. If you’ve had a long-term-ish dream of owning your business, even if it’s a dream that’s flickered, disappeared for some time, and then come back again, that’s the universe poking at you to make the change. In addition to these three truths… You Feel: Your preferred form of stress is self-induced. What I mean is: It is less stressful for you to grind by yourself than it is to be micromanaged by someone else. You prefer dealing with your own work (and solely shouldering any consequences when things go wrong) than having to answer to colleagues and/or managers you might not respect and whose actions affect your performance. That there is no dream environment in which you’re happier working for someone else. In your wildest imagination, you can’t see a situation where having a boss is better than being your own boss â€" benefits, perks, and fancy office lobbies be damned. There’s a reason why *all* those jobs have felt “off”, love. You’re ready and willing to do the work. Very big disclaimer: Starting your own business and being your own boss is work. Like, a lot of work. Like, your business is only successful if you get up, put in the time, and commit to it kind of work. Especially in the beginning, you’ll need to bring the best version of yourself to the table to get this baby up and running. Truthfully, almost no one feels fully prepared out the gate â€" but! â€" you can prepare yourself to get comfortable with the idea of being uncomfortable. Bottom line: You don’t need to have your sh*t totally together, but you do need the self-motivation to start it up and keep it going. Here’s one thing I like to remind clients who aren’t sure if they’re ready for the big push: Whatever you think your “not great” personality traits are (easily frazzled, too much of a perfectionist, does not work well with others), you can own it and still shine! Starting your own biz means you can build your business around these “not great” traits as well as what you rock at and are valued for and craft a system that works for you! Isn’t that awesome? Now if you’ve read this article and know/feel all the things above, I’m so happy to tell you: You’re ready to be an entrepreneur!
